Now Byzantium, if Paradox wants to stick to history, will not split up upon a ruler's death. The Abbasids will subjugate the Khazars and the Umayyads (Cordoba). The Franks will unite and conquer most, if not all, of Western Europe. They will probably also take most of the Avars' territory. So here's what I see happening: Byzantium will reclaim Italy, and might squabble over it with the Franks. With the new tribal mechanics, I imagine the Avars and Khazars (which I'm assuming they also apply to) will stand no chance against them. There are now three big blobs: the Franks, the Byzantines, and the Abbasids. Rewind the clock 97 years, and you'll see that the situation has changed. As you can see, in 866, Europe and the Mediterranean are at the whim of several large powers, but there are still plenty of viable options.

My biggest concern deals with blobbing and the difficulty that will come with playing as a small, independent state. Currently, /r/CrusaderKings is operating its seventh communal game.
